DIY Shed Build Start to Finish: Concrete, Framing, Siding & Metal Roof

Welcome back to Buildy Bunch! In this exciting episode, we’re taking on a full DIY shed build from the ground up. From breaking up old concrete to adding the finishing touches on a sturdy metal roof, we’re covering everything you need to know to build your own backyard shed. Whether you need extra storage, a place for your lawnmower, or even a cozy wood shed for the winter months, this project has got you covered.

So grab your toolbelt and join us for this fun and rewarding build!

Step 1: Laying the Foundation – Pouring the Concrete Slab

Every great structure starts with a solid foundation, and this shed is no different! First, we cleared out the area and dug up the ground to make space for a brand-new concrete slab. After setting up the forms, we added rebar for reinforcement and called in the concrete truck. Pouring the slab was a satisfying process, but the real challenge was keeping the kids and dogs off of it while it set!

As Matthew 7:24-25 reminds us, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Just like a strong faith, a sturdy foundation ensures longevity and durability!

Once the concrete was cured and the anchor bolts were in place, we were ready to start framing.

Step 2: Framing the Shed Walls & Roof

With the foundation set, we headed to the hardware store to grab our framing materials. Since our concrete slab had a slight slope, we had to adapt our framing technique, building the bottom and top plates first and then stick-framing the studs in between. It turned out to be a great method that worked well!

The whole family got involved as we framed up the walls, added trusses for support, and got the shed structure standing strong. Along the way, we even found a crazy bug—Gilbert was brave enough to check it out up close!

With the shed fully framed, we moved on to sheathing the walls and prepping for the roof installation.

Step 3: Installing the Roof – Metal Roofing for the Win!

For the roof, we had a decision to make: shingles or metal roofing? The Lord had this all planned out. No luck here! We had some leftover metal from our house, and our friend had some extra sheets as well, making just enough product for the shed.

Before installing the metal panels, we applied synthetic underlayment to add a protective layer against the elements. Then, we carefully measured and centered the roofing sheets, making sure everything was secure before screwing them into place. The final touch was adding fascia boards and a snow guard to keep everything neat and durable.

Once the roofing was complete, the shed was officially weather-tight—just in time for winter!

Step 4: Building Custom Shelving & Storage

With the exterior done, it was time to make the inside functional. We needed shelving for tools, firewood, and gear, so we got to work measuring and cutting 2x4s to create sturdy storage spaces. Since the floor wasn’t perfectly level, we used the top plate as our reference point to make sure the shelves were even on both sides.

A little problem-solving and teamwork made this step both fun and rewarding. In the end, the shed’s interior turned into a well-organized storage space ready for all of our backyard essentials.

Step 5: Installing Gutters for Proper Drainage

The final step in our shed build was installing gutters to manage rainwater runoff. We picked up some 10-ft gutter sections from the hardware store and carefully measured and installed them to direct water away from the shed and foundation.

Since our root cellar’s roof also sloped towards the shed, we added an extra gutter system to catch that runoff too. A little planning and elbow grease made all the difference in keeping the shed dry and protected.

Final Thoughts & Project Wrap-Up

This DIY shed build was a big project, but taking it one step at a time made it manageable—and fun! From digging out the foundation to installing the final piece of trim, it was a rewarding experience that the whole family contributed to.

On rainy days like today, we’re reminded of Galatians 6:9—”Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” A perfect reminder to keep pushing forward, even when the job gets tough!

The shed is now fully functional, providing storage for our bikes, lawnmower, firewood, and more. We still need to add a door and a fresh coat of paint come spring, but for now, we’re calling it a job well done!
